Major Festivals

The Shrinathji Temple in Nathdwara follows a vibrant ritual calendar that revolves around the “leelas” (divine pastimes) of Lord Krishna. Throughout the year, the temple celebrates numerous Vaishnavite festivals, many of which are unique to the Pushtimarg tradition.

Here are the most important festivals celebrated at Shrinathji Temple:

1. Janmashtami (Birth of Lord Krishna)

  • When: August/September (Ashtami of Krishna Paksha, Bhadrapada)

  • Significance: Grand celebration of Krishna's birth. The temple is decorated elaborately, and special darshans, music, and midnight rituals are held.

  • Highlight: A miniature cradle (jhoola) is prepared for baby Krishna.

2. Annakut / Govardhan Puja

​​

  • When: Day after Diwali (October/November)

  • Significance: Marks the day Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill to protect villagers.

  • Highlight: A massive mountain of food (Annakut) is prepared and offered to Shrinathji, symbolizing Govardhan.

3. Holi and Dhol Utsav

​​

  • When: March (Phalgun)

  • Significance: Celebration of colors and divine love.

  • Highlight: Devotees play Holi with colors and flowers. The deity is dressed in bright clothes and adorned with gulal.

4. Sharad Purnima

​​

  • When: October (Full Moon of Ashwin month)

  • Significance: Commemorates the Ras Leela – the celestial dance of Krishna with the gopis.

  • Highlight: White sweet dishes (like doodh-peda) are offered; the temple stays open for moonlit darshan.

5. Radha Ashtami

​​

  • When: 15 days after Janmashtami (Ashtami of Shukla Paksha, Bhadrapada)

  • Significance: Celebrates the birth of Radha Rani, Krishna's divine consort.

  • Highlight: Shrinathji is adorned in special attire representing Radha-Krishna's union.

6. Vasant Panchami

  • When: January/February

  • Significance: Welcomes spring.

  • Highlight: Shrinathji wears yellow garments, and flower-based decorations are used.

​

7. Dolotsav (Phool Dol / Flower Swing Festival)

​​

  • When: Holi season

  • Significance: Represents playful swings and divine joy.

  • Highlight: Shrinathji is placed on a flower-decorated swing (hindola), and soft flower petals are showered.

8. Yamuna Jayanti

​​

  • When: Chaitra Shukla Saptami (March/April)

  • Significance: Birth of Goddess Yamuna, who holds a special place in Pushtimarg.

  • Highlight: Special prayers and rituals are performed by Yamuna banks (replicated in the temple).
